Artist Extraordinaire!
Clinton Herdman is a self-taught artist, creating
pieces in pointillism - acryllic on canvas - pastels - wood –
whitestone - wire and more.
He was born in Levin in 1965 but raised in Wanganui. His dyslexia (a
condition not recognised at the time of his schooling) was a stumbling
block academically, but shows clearly that his artistic flair is completely
innate.
The encouragement of family and friends led him to believe in himself
as an artist, and his determination and talent has kept his career moving
ahead to this day.
His influences stem greatly from experiences travelling around NZ &
overseas and consequently his subject matter ranges from natural environments
to abstract ideas.
He loves nature and the outdoors as much as he loves introspection and
the forms and shapes he finds in his imagination. Understandably these
often come together in his works.
| Initially, Clinton worked mostly in ‘portable’ mediums,
due to living ‘on the road’so to speak, in motorhomes as he travelled
NZ for about 8 years. |
|
Among these were Indian Ink sketches, which led to
his popular ‘pointillism’ fine art studies
of historic buildings, residences, people & animals.
Clinton has done many, many commissions in pointillism over
the years and has become quite recognised in this style, which
requires painstaking commitment to detail. Literally thousands
of hours have gone into the works he has created in this media.
|
Another art style Clinton has developed whilst travelling is his `twisted
wire’ sculptures, usually made of copper wire and mounted on natural
materials such as wood or stone.
| With his residence in Otematata in the Waitaki Valley, North
Otago, he has had more opportunities to work with bigger pieces
and more complex mixtures of media.
He did a range of Colour Pastel works,
which featured in the Wanganui Arts Festival 2000
and a brief exhibit in Dunedin.
Prints of these are available, and can be ordered
from the website.

He has also worked with acrylic on canvas,
and acrylic on wood, most of which have been sold here and
overseas. |
Clint's most recent
works involve materials from the region close to his current residence…
such as Oamaru Stone, (aka Whitestone or Limestone), macrocarpa
timber, alluvial stone, and wire – often combining several
of these materials in one piece. He quickly developed a feel
for the Oamaru Stone, which he enjoys working with due to it’s
flexibility. From a sculpted ‘dolphin table’, to large
garden plinths, to copper wire trees on stone, Clinton has developed
his own ‘style’ in this medium already.

He exhibited at the Wanganui Blooming Artz Festival 2001,
featuring a comprehensive series of plants and insects from his
imagination done in Oamaru Stone and wire.
Due to their popularity, Clinton has continued with this ‘series’
of works. These and other artworks have appeared in several exhibits
in the last year or so.

Clinton is currently exhibiting in the Kurow Heritage Museum in North Otago
. |

Clinton is currently working on a new project in conjunction with
his partner (entertainer, Brian
Omundsen) which will feature an artistic representation of
the songs on Brian’s upcoming originals album. This will
culminate in an ‘on-the-road’ touring exhibit sometime
in the future.
You can purchase originals or prints from this site via email, or even commission Clinton to do a specific piece for you. |
